Scientific Method

This week we learned about the scientific method and did a short experiment to show each step. We put a gummy life saver in a cup of water. We made a hypothesis, conducted the experiment, recorded our observations and drew our conclusions.

Qrafter Pro...QR Codes Anyone?

This year I made a goal of integrating QR codes more into my classroom. I found this wonderful QR app for my iPad called Qrafter Pro. Qrafter has a free version and a pay version. I download the paid version for $2.99. I love this app. I can make QR codes and print them. I can also read QR codes as well. I used this program to make my beginning of the year bulletin board. Each student has their own messages they can read using a QR reader.

Open House Parent Gift

This year I decided to give the parents an apple. On the leaf I wrote:
An apple for the teacher...
It's really nothing new.
Except when you remember,
Parents are teachers too!

Beginning of year treat bags

This year I had the time to make treat bags for the beginning of the year. I tried to use a technology theme to go with our eMINTs classroom. I put a Mounds bar for mounds of information found on the internet, Smarties for being a smartie about internet safety, a Whooper for our wiki has a whooper of information, Jolly Rancher for voicethreading is a jolly fun way to make books and Three Musketeers for being a three musketeer with cooperative learning.

Evernote and Skitch

Evernote and Skitch are two great free programs to use for diagraming. I used Skitch this week to take a picture of my flower containers. I then labeled each picture with the plants I put in the containers. I am very excited about having a labeled picture gardening journal. My Skitch pictures were then saved into Evernote so I will have them in the future.

I began to think of the possibilities for Skitch and Evernote in the classroom. Student journaling, mini lessons and diagraming. Check out Skitch. It is a wonderful program made for the iPad, iPhone, and Droid.

World Wonder Project

I happen to be reading Cool Cat Teacher Blog this morning and ran across a new site that looks very interesting. Google has made the World Wonder Project that consists of 132 different locations around the world. Each locations has pictures, videos and information. There are also teacher guides for elementary and secondary. This site does work on an iPad, however the 3D model will not show up on an iPad. I found Independence Hall to be interesting and is part of our curriculum.

QR Treasure Hunt Generator

I recently was reminded of a great site that allows you to make your own QR codes. You can make a series of questions with the QR Treasure Hunt Generator and then the site will help you convert to QR codes that you can hang around the classroom. I had the idea to use these QR codes at Open House to put fun facts about myself so parents and students can learn a little about me.

End of the Year Student Gifts

I am a follower of the Confessions of a Teaching Junkie  blog. One recent post showed end of the gifts to students using Wordle. Wordle is an on-line tool that creates word clouds. I have used Wordle in the past for vocabulary words. The post showed using wordle to make word clouds for each student. I made an organizer with each of the students names on it.  I had the student write down one adjective to describe their classmates.  I then took the organizers and made Wordles for each student.  I then went to the dollar store and purchased frames for each of the Wordles and framed them. The students loved them.
